After the Aleste 520EX (a russian clone of the Amstrad CPC/MSX), the XiAleste by h2w

-

The XiAleste by h2w is a recreation with modern components of an upgraded Amstrad CPC 6128 presented on Hackaday (the sound is upgraded notably). The PCB of the XiAleste is available as is the FGPA code source of the XiAleste both on Github. You can read informations on the XiAleste on CPC Wiki.

You will find below informations from 2019 about the Aleste 520EX which inspired the XiAleste.

The Aleste 520EX is a russian clone of the Amstrad CPC and the MSX. It works not with AMSDOS but with the MSX DOS (see this russian site in english). There was already a thread about the Aleste 520EX on CPCWiki, but this time Sebastian Blanco is talking about the Aleste kit he just bought. Finally he isnt the only one in the Amstrad CPC community to have one. If you are interesting it's seems to possible to buy one kit by writing to tetroid at inbox ru like Sebastian did.

You can see a youtube video of an Aleste 520EX running the Phortem demo by Condense (and MSX games at the start of the video).

A modified version of Caprice32 permits to emulate at least in part the Aleste 520EX.

AYT : a new sound Format by GPA and Logon System

-

Tronic, Siko and Longshot are presenting today a new audio file format called AYT (AY Turbo).

It is a compact and simple format usable by any program requiring high CPU performance and cycle-accurate constant-time operation, it is available on Pouet.

This format is intended for all platforms using an AY-3-8910/AY-3-8912 (General Instrument) sound processor or a compatible chip (YM-2149 from Yamaha). Several authoring tools and players have been developed and tested for the following platforms: Amstrad CPC and CPC+, MSX, ZX Spectrum 128, VG5000 (with VG5210 soundcard). AYT files are produced from YM files.

Many tools have been created around this format (windows, linux), some of which can be used directly online (e.g., YM->AYT converter, YM/AYT player, YM sequencer, AYT Jukebox).

Z80A players have been created on several old-school platforms, such as the Amstrad CPC and Plus, MSX, ZX Spectrum 128 and VG 5000 (with the VG 5210 sound card). These players have the particularity of occupying little memory space, being very (very) fast, and operating in constant cycles. More information is available (guides, sources, executable, benchmarks, ...) on Github, on AYT Web Tools and on AYT Player – AY/YM Emulator (WIP).

UPX v5.0.2 by The UPX Team for ms-dos and other OS

-

UPX v5.0.2 by The UPX Team is an executable compressor for several operating systems including ms-dos. At the time of my Amstrad PC 1512, I was using Lzexe by Fabrice Bellard (who also owned an Amstrad PC 1512 DD), Diet by Teddy Matsumoto, PKLite by Phil Katz (PKWare) then later UPX.

To make so beautiful Amstrad CPC loading screens like Eric Cubizolle (Titan), it's easy, you just need to use the same painting program : Multipaint by Tero Heikkinen AKA Dr. Terrorz, and maybe a bit of talent and mostly a lot of work.

Titan is describing Multipaint as a mmix of OCP Art Studio and Deluxe Paint for windows which offers the possibility of using the resolutions and palettes of a whole bunch of old computers including the Amstrad CPC (mode 0 and 1, overscan possible in mode 0).

Collect as many candles as possible, along the way, will help him gain time to reach the party (Dia the Los Muertos) on time. Then RUN,RUN and RUN !

Abatape by Abalore, tape emulation featuring multi loading on Amstrad CPC and more

-

Abalore has a project he is working since September 2024 : the Abatape.

It is using an Arduino Nano ATMega328p@16 Mhz, a 700 mAH battery for about 24 hours of use, a SD reader and an OLED screen. It is especially able to detect the two motors making a real taping moving the magnetic band so it can support multi loading. Someone did suggest to add writing support to create new tape files. The Abatape supports of course the Amstrad CPC (.CDT) but several other computers as it is based on a Maxduino firmware :

  • Spectrum : TAP, TZX
  • MSX : CAS, TSX
  • ZX80 : O
  • ZX81 : P
  • Acorn Atom, Electron : UEF (without compression), TSX
  • Dragon 32/64, Tandy CoCo : CAS, TSX
  • SVI Spectravideo : TSX
  • Oric 1/Atmos : no .TAP support unless converted to TSX
